Research Into the Damaging Effects on Vinyl Siding
From the National Association of Home Builders: a white paper on “The Effect of Reflected Sunlight from Low-e and other Double Pane Window Glass on Vinyl Siding” (February, 2010).
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Building Products Issues Committee formed a task group to collect and evaluate available information on the issue and in February 2010 released a report of their findings. The NAHB report helps to provide a clear understanding of this issue from a third party perspective and outlines how siding distortion from reflected sunlight might be remedied, or even avoided, in the future.

Abstract: This white paper presents what is known regarding the issue and identifies where more research is needed. Three primary topics are discussed: environmental factors that control the transfer of heat to and from the siding surface; vinyl siding properties that may affect heat build-up and permanent distortion; and factors that determine the properties of reflected solar radiation from glass surfaces, including insulating window glass. The document was prepared as an account of work sponsored by the U.S. Government.
From The Snell Group, a white paper: A Unique Thermal Problem Found in Certain Double-Glazed Windows” (2008). The report presents findings of an investigation into the loss of insulating argon gas between double-glazed windows. The resulting concavity plays a role in concentrating solar energy.
As certain types of windows age, the argon gas escapes from the window, but is not easily replaced by air, leaving the internal space at a negative pressure. The panes of the glass are thus pushed together.
