Vinyl Siding Installation Manual
Looking for best practices on vinyl siding installation?
This manual is published by the Vinyl Siding Institute, Inc. (VSI) as a service to the industry and sets forth the basic guidelines for vinyl siding installation. The instructions are based in part on ASTM D4756, Standard Practice for Installation of Rigid PVC Siding and Soffit.
The Vinyl Siding Installation Manual also features helpful on historic restoration, how to clean vinyl siding (including stain removal), and recycling leftover vinyl siding scrap.
Professionals with at least two years of experience can become VSI Certified Installers if they successfully complete a course and pass a written examination. You can find a list of upcoming classes in your area here. There are a number of benefits to becoming a Certified Installer; to learn more, visit our VSI Certified Installers page.
Before you proceed with the steps in this vinyl siding installation manual, installers need to be aware of building code requirements in the geographic areas where they are installing, and how the codes relate to the instructions given in this manual and by the siding manufacturer. The requirements of local building codes must always be observed, because they represent the legal requirements for an installation in a given jurisdiction (though most local codes are based on national model building codes). For more information, please see page 2 of the Vinyl Siding Installation Manual.
In addition to the VSI Installation Manual (also available in Spanish), there are Vinyl Siding Installation Quick Tips and videos on How to Install a Starter Strip, Replacing Damaged Panels, Installing Horizontal Panels, and Finishing at the Top of the Wall.
