Vinyl siding is verifiably green
With the growing demand for sustainable buildings, architects, specifiers, and builders are relying more on referencing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for accurate sustainable product data.
As the trade association for manufacturers and suppliers of vinyl and polymeric exterior siding, VSI has taken a leading role to produce the industry’s first EPDs—with declarations for vinyl siding, insulated vinyl siding, and polypropylene siding.
Each EPD document provides:
- Product definition and information about material science
- Information about basic materials and their origin
- Description of the product’s manufacturer
- Indication of product processing
- Information about the in-use conditions
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results
- Testing results and verification

Sustainable Solutions Corporation, a sustainability consulting firm, collected data from published studies, manufacturers, and in a large part from Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES). BEES was developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a way to compare hundreds of building products, including a range of exterior cladding options, and provides analysis of their life cycle impacts. This report summarizes these findings.
